Is the energy of a place its true identity? I placed a vibration sensor on Alfred Hill — the hills surrounding Alfred University, where I completed my graduate studies — to capture the frequency of its movements. This data is transmitted wirelessly to a ceramic bowl in the studio, where a vibration motor causes the bowl and its sand surface to tremble at the exact same frequencies. When the ceramic bowl vibrates in unison with the hill, does the sand pattern on its surface become a portrait of Alfred Hill itself?
